Brazilian Liberty Banknote – O.D.T. 3/7

If the Statue of Liberty was Brazilian, she’d be sitting down.

There are no fewer than 3 State of Liberty replicas in Brazil and many more around the world. Below is a link to one example.

It seems to me that this Lady of Liberty on the reverse of an old 50 Cruzeieros note is a more laid-back cousin of our familiar liberty. Perhaps she is getting ready to go for a swim? The image of the broken shackles on the bottom right corner is  nod to Brazil’s independence and the abolition of slavery in 1888.

The imagery on world banknotes us pretty spectacular, so I will find a few other gems in the near future to feature in these blogs. Notes like this tend to be very inexpensive.
